DISCOVER WHAT LIFE IN THE CITY OF ETERNAL SPRING
Trujillo is a beautiful example of modern touches seamlessly blending with colonial-era architecture. Known as the “City of Eternal Spring” for its beautiful weather and burgeoning cultural scene, Trujillo’s rich history unfolds before your eyes as you stroll its streets—many of which appear the same as they did hundreds of years ago.
Your journey to Trujillo will begin when you disembark in Salaverry, a small port town located 30 minutes to the south. From here, you’ll have easy access to Trujillo, where you can start by taking in the Plaza de Armas. Buildings dating back to the 16th-century are awash in vivid hues and instantly transport you back in time to a world of Spanish conquistadors. While in the plaza, you’ll also find Basilica Menor Catedral (or simply, “La Catedral” to locals)—a canary-yellow church that is home to a museum of religious and colonial art, and a renowned basilica.
Those looking for a more in-depth dive into the region’s history will want to tour the archaeological sites that surround Trujillo, including Huaca de la Luna y Sol, Huaca del Dragon, and Chan Chan—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest ancient city in South America. As you tour these sites, you’ll uncover their sophisticated designs and cultural significance, making them must-visit destinations during your trip.
Before returning to your ship, make your way to the shopping district, where you can peruse a variety of woodcarvings and ceramics, as well as purchase a pair of leather shoes from one of the city’s many local cordwainers.
