Explore the magic of Miyazaki

Situated on Kyushu's southeast shores, away from the hustle and bustle, the seaside city of Miyazaki shines as a hidden gem of Japan. And when we say shines, we mean it literally. After all, Miyazaki is known for enjoying more hours of sunshine than any other city in Japan. Sunseekers who cruise here will want to make their way to Kisakihama beach to relax while watching local surfers tackle the long, even waves lapping along the shore.

Explorers eager to dig into Japan's history and culture should set out for Heiwadai-kōen (Peace Park). This lush park is home to Miyazaki's famous Peace Monument, built to honor the 2600th anniversary of Japan's first emperor's ascension. After, stroll through Haniwa Garden, where more than 400 haniwa (terracotta clay statues) stand. Elsewhere, you'll find several shrines highlighting Japanese creation myths, art galleries highlighting national and international works, and museums dedicated to everything from natural history to outer space.

When you cruise to Miyazaki with us, be sure to explore beyond the city. To the northwest is Aya, with the carefully reconstructed Aya Castle. South along the coast is Sun Messe Nichinan park, home of the world's only sanctioned replicas of Easter Island's Moai statues. A little further south is the famous Udo cave shrine, where you can toss wishing stones for good luck.

If exploration works up your appetite, sample chikin nanban, a local specialty consisting of sweet fried chicken and tartar sauce. Miyazaki's jitokko chicken has a reputation as being the best in all of Japan. Some even suggest it's the tastiest in the world! You'll also find plenty of award-winning Miyazaki gyū (beef) dishes here that can be enjoyed with shōchū — a signature liquor made from rice, sweet potato, or barley. And if you're looking for a quick bite to eat, order zosui — delicious ramen known for its seaweed-based broth.
