Travel on to Asakusa, the center of Edo culture, and hop on a rickshaw ride to experience iconic landmarks. After lunch at a local restaurant, a short walk takes you to a taiko drum shop where you can play the taiko drum and learn about its craftsmanship, and see portable shrines ("mikoshi") which are carried during Shinto festivals. You’ll also learn about the cultural context of taiko drums and how they have been used throughout the history of Japan as a part of ritual performance and communication with Shinto deities. After breakfast, check out of your hotel, leaving your large luggage behind for your one-night stay in Hakone. With your guide, hop on your coach to Ginza for a special lesson of Japanese swordsmanship and a tea ceremony. When you arrive, change to a hakama, traditional samurai garb. Watch a real katana sword demonstration, then learn the basic posture and forms of batto (pulling the sword from the hilt). After lunch at a local restaurant, take a short coach transfer to Tokyo station to ride the world-famous Shinkansen bullet train to Odawara. From Odawara you’ll be driven to Hakone. From Sounzan station, ride a cable car to Owakudani (at the top of a volcano) and enjoy splendid views of Hakone and even Mt. Fuji if the weather is clear. Hop on your coach again and head to Hakone Shrine, with its red torii gate facing Lake Ashi. After lunch at a local restaurant, head over to a yosegizaiku shop to watch parquetry work—a local specialty of Hakone that uses various types of wood to create mosaic art, including “puzzle boxes”. After the visit, travel by Shinkansen bullet train back to Tokyo station. Here, a coach will take you back to your hotel, with the rest of the day free at your leisure.

Check out from the hotel after breakfast and depart for a half-day tour of Tokyo before embarking on your Azamara cruise. First, visit the Imperial Palace Plaza, the remnant of Edo Castle, which was the center of samurai rule by the Tokugawa clan from 1603 to 1867. The Imperial Family relocated from Kyoto to Tokyo in 1868 and the former Edo Castle became the Imperial Palace. View some of the original castle structure which remains today, as well as the Nijubashi Bridge—another iconic landmark of historic Tokyo. Travel on to Hamarikyu Villa, a villa formerly owned by the Tokugawa Clan. The tranquil garden is another sign of the grandeur of the days during the clan’s rule. Having completed your visit, transfer to the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal to board your Azamara ship.
