What do I think about when I know there’s a cruise on the near horizon? Books!
I know, I should be drooling over the exotic destinations I’ll be seeing for the first time, the delicious food onboard and ashore, or having someone else pick up after my husband and me daily. But no, I can hardly wait for the consecutive sea days when time stretches out in front of me with nothing to do but read.
We're excited to be joining the November 3rd sailing of the Azamara Quest. Our itinerary includes three consecutive sea days at the beginning of the voyage, and again at the end. I plan to fill my time with reading.
Our voyage itinerary includes several fascinating ports in India and Sri Lanka.
I’ve read almost all popular fiction about India (A Suitable Boy, by Vikram Seth remains my favorite, with Midnight’s Children by Salman Rushdie a close second.) I enjoyed reading Running in the Family and Anil’s Ghost, both about Sri Lanka, by Michael Ondaatje. I just this week finished reading The Moonlight Palace by Liz Rosenberg, about a family in 1920s Singapore and loved that as well.
So my dilemma is what new book on the region should I download for my iPad for the cruise? Here are my parameters: a good story, not too violent, based on historical or present day events. Any suggestions?

Croatia has seen a sort of transformation recently, one that has taken it from a hidden gem of coastal delights to one of the hottest travel destinations in Europe. What makes this small Balkan nation so appealing? It could be the brilliant sapphire waters of the Adriatic and spectacular white beaches. Or maybe it’s the medieval architecture and walled towns steeped in history begging to be uncovered. Or perhaps it’s the friendly, welcoming people and unique folk culture.
