OverviewHide
Durban to Port Elizabeth Journey to the Shamwari Private Game Reserve and enjoy a dawn, day, and dusk safari in search of Africa's big five: lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants, and buffalos. This three-day adventure gives you countless opportunities to spot Africa's elusive big game animals within a reserve celebrated for its conservation efforts. Meet knowledgeable rangers who will take you in search of African wildlife and enjoy the incredible amenities of the luxury Bayethe Tented Camp, treating yourself to delicious food or a game walk at one of the two Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries. Day 1: (B, L) Meet your English-speaking guide who will assist you with your transfer to Durban's King Shaka International Airport, for a leisurely flight to Port Elizabeth. From Port Elizabeth, enjoy a 1.5-hour drive to the Shamwari Private Game Reserve. Shamwari is the southernmost big game reserve in Africa. This malaria-free reserve is steeped in settler history. Step back in time and enter an era when big game animals roamed freely on the Eastern Cape. Shamwari is dedicated to preserving a disappearing way of life and to conservation. The reserve employs highly-skilled rangers, a wildlife research team, and its own anti-poaching unit to protect the ecological balance of the wilderness preserve. At the entrance gate, you'll meet Shamwari's rangers, who will escort you to the luxurious Bayethe Tented Camp in rugged 4x4 vehicles. The lodge boasts a large deck overlooking a waterhole, for even more wildlife viewing opportunities. Enjoy a welcome drink at the camp as well as a delightful high tea service. Then, embark on a late-afternoon game drive in your open 4x4 vehicle, in search of Africa's big five. As dusk and dark sets in, spotlights will be used to seek out nocturnal animals. Enjoy sundowner drinks and light snacks in the bush, after which you'll return to camp for a delicious dinner. Day 2: (B, L, D) Wake in the morning to meet with your expert game ranger. Enjoy coffee, biscuits, and tea, and speak to your ranger who will design a daily program just for your intimate group. Then, embark on a morning game drive in search of the animals that rise at dawn. Seek out lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants, and buffalos, and other animals that live in the African wilderness, while learning about local flora and fauna. Return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious breakfast, after which you'll have free time to enjoy the camp's amenities. Relax while surrounded by the wilderness. Book a treatment at the spa (at your own expense); read under the shade of a tree, or go for a swim. Savor delicious food and drinks and visit one of the two Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries: the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre or the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Enjoy afternoon tea on the patio, after which you'll embark on a dusk safari, giving you yet another opportunity to spot Africa's elusive big five. End a wonderful day with a delicious dinner in the lodge's lavish dining area. Listen to the crackle of the fireplace as you dine under the stars. Day 3: (B) Enjoy an early wake-up call and gather in the living area for tea, coffee, and biscuits, and then embark on a yet another early-morning big game drive. This is your last opportunity to go in search of Africa's elusive wild animals. Ride your rugged 4x4 vehicle through the African bush, letting your rangers track the creatures, as you keep your binoculars handy. Snap photos of the breathtaking African landscapes and the animals that call it home. During this drive, you'll enjoy yet another opportunity to spot Africa's incredible big game animals. Learn more about the wildlife, conservation, and the flora of the region from your knowledgeable rangers. Then, return to the lodge for a sumptuous breakfast, before it's time to pack your bags. Transfer to the Port Elizabeth harbor and return to the ship just in time for lunch.
