Journey along Matsue’s ancient 400-year-old canal system on the Horikawa River Cruise, with a visit to Matsue Castle. Matsue Castle was constructed in 1611, and is one of only twelve remaining castles in Japan. Climb to the viewpoint of this national treasure and enjoy spectacular views of the castle grounds and city. Then, hop aboard the Horikawa River Cruise, where you’ll get a glimpse of the city only visible from the water. The boat is low enough to fit under the city’s 17 bridges. Take off your shoes, enjoy the breezes, and take in the sights. You’ll travel along canals that remain relatively unchanged from when they were first constructed 400 years ago. You’ll also see the beautifully-preserved Shiomi Nawate, an Edo period street.
