Artsy and bathed in faded glory, the historic beachside town of Grand Bassam was, once-upon-a-time, Cote D'Ivoire's French colonial capital. An 1896 yellow-fever epidemic wiped out the town, which relocated to Bingerville, but the late 19th- and early 20th-century French colonial hamlet remains and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Home to old grand mansions, mesmerizing shores and palm-backed beaches Bassam regained its glory as a glittery top resort. As you explore Grand Bassam, you'll visit the Musée National du Costume, a popular museum that has an excellent collection of traditional costumes, masks, and ethnographic photographs that gives you a fascinating insight into the country's culture and history. You'll also visit lively streets that are lined with eateries, shops, and art galleries that give Bassam that "place to be" feeling. After your tour, experience the true beauty of the Ivory Coast as you spend several hours relaxing on Grand Bassam's finest beach.
