You won't have to work hard to experience the local charms, rich history and favorite attractions of Niigata on this short sightseeing excursion. Begin with a 30-minute drive through the city, passing the old customs office and crossing the Shinano River by way of the historic Bandai Bridge. In the heart of the city, pass by the Hakusan Shrine, dedicated to the God of Marriage and dating back more than 1,000 years. You'll also enjoy two great photo stops during your exploration. The first is at Hakusan Park, created in 1873 as Japan's first Citizens' Park. This time of year the seasonal flowers are sure to be in bloom, adding an extra splash of color to an already beautiful backdrop of shade trees and glistening ponds. Your next stop is the Befco Bakauke Observatory, where you'll soak up views of Niigata from more than 400 feet above the city.
