Tokyo is a city of contrasts. Neon-lit streets and towering skyscrapers give way to peaceful shrines and sprawling parklands. Deep-set traditions exist in harmony with the frenetic pace of city life. Your journey begins on the grounds of the Imperial Palace before visiting Tokyo’s oldest temple, Senso-ji, built to honor the Goddess of Mercy. Take a stroll down Nakamise, an old shopping street just outside the temple, and stop to partake in a traditional tea ceremony. The next day, board Japan’s bullet train and trade the bustle of Tokyo for the hot springs and peaceful splendor of Hakone.
