A “Fat Virgin” in the Caribbean Sea
Local lore has it that the unusual shape of this little bit of paradise reminded Christopher Columbus of a reclining, voluptuous woman, so he named it Virgin Gorda, the "Fat Virgin." Columbus just may have been on to something because as it turns out, Virgin Gorda is the perfect place to simply kick back and relax.
Take a nap in a hammock while the tropical breeze washes over you, explore quiet beaches like Spring Bay and Savannah Bay, or recline in a chaise lounger and watch the waves roll in. Of course, once you’ve had a chance to recharge, there’s still lots to see and do.
Virgin Gorda is a good place to explore in a Jeep, swim with dolphins, or hike to the highest point, Gorda Peak National Park. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding islands, including Richard Branson’s ultra-exclusive Necker Island. But the main attraction here is the Baths—an area on the southern portion of the island strewn with giant boulders. The boulders—some as big as a house—and are the perfect place for exploring and seeking shelter from the warm Caribbean sun.
