2020 has been an unusual year filled with many unknowns. Our crew are looking forward to welcoming you back aboard, and we want to extend a special thank-you to all the guests who have been cheering us on.

    Get to Know Carol Cabezas

    In her role as Chief Operating Officer, Carol is responsible for the full range of operations of the cruise line including Sales, Marketing, Revenue, Finance, Deployment and Shipboard Operations. But we wanted to dive deeper and get to know the more personal side. Scroll through for our Q&A.

    Q: What do you love most about Azamara?

    A: Azamara is a brand with a purpose–to enable connection with other people and cultures. We celebrate what is beautiful about our differences and, in doing so, create understanding and appreciation for others. Also, I feel privileged to work alongside such dedicated, creative and resilient shipboard and shoreside colleagues, as they are as passionate about our purpose and give everything they have to see this special brand succeed.

    Q: From the destinations Azamara has visited, which ones have you been able to explore? Which one was your favorite?

    A: That’s hard to decide given the abundance of options and how much each has to offer! If I could only pick one, it would have to be the Amalfi Coast. The people, food, music, history, architecture–it’s the whole package. The pace of life, the warmth of the people, the beauty of the terrain, I enjoy all of it.

    Q: What cruise itinerary are you interested in doing in 2021? Have you been to those destinations before?

    A: I would love to do a back to back on the 22 and 29 May voyages aboard the Azamara Quest. It has a great mix of old favorites (Venice, Dubrovnik, Amalfi and more) with some new places I haven’t had the opportunity to visit yet including Montenegro and Lisbon. Lisbon is a classic and it’s overdue on my list!

    Q: What do you hope to accomplish for Azamara once we go back to sailing?

    A: My goal is to return to the water in a way that ensures health and safety while maintaining the aspects of the Azamara experience our Circle members know and love. Some things will need to be different, but the feeling of home away from home is what we intend to preserve.

    Q: When you don’t have your COO cap on, what are some things you like to do for fun?

    A: When I’m not working, I’m spending time with my family. Whether it’s going to the beach, working out or dreaming about the next place we will visit together. We consider travel an aspect of education and have made it a point to grow our kids’ perspective by visiting different countries. What better to expand someone’s mind and appreciation for the world around us than seeing the differences firsthand?

    Q: Is there one book that has helped you throughout your career and why?

    A: There is a training course (based on a book) about working with others which I took many years ago that impacted my career deeply. Sometimes lessons seem intuitive, but until you really think about the concept and make a conscious choice to adapt your behavior you don’t reap the benefit of the lesson. The lesson that resonated was as follows: there are several personalities and no one personality leads to success more than another. What makes you successful is your versatility to work with any of those personalities.

    Q: What is your favorite cuisine? Favorite dish?

    A: I love Mediterranean food. Hummus, shawarmas, tabbouleh, moussaka–all of it is delicious.

    Q: If you could live in one country for one year, what country would that be and why?

    A: This will sound repetitive, but I have to go with Italy. There is so much to learn, see and do–cooking lessons, biking the Tuscan hillsides, swimming in spectacular grottos. I could spend years there and still have things on my list.

    Q: What is one piece of advice you always give your team?

    A: I’m sure they are tired of hearing me say it–but I don’t get tired of telling them: Never, never, never give up. When times are tough, we are being tested and if we don’t give up and stick together great things will be achieved.

  • Elisabeth Vogel, Hotel Director on the Azamara Journey

    Elisabeth joined us as a relief Hotel Director, but we’re thrilled to announce she will be staying on permanently in this role. We had the opportunity to chat with her to hear how she feels since accepting the position. Please join me in congratulating Elisabeth—we can’t wait for her to welcome our loyalty members back home soon!

  • Q: How did you feel about receiving the exciting news on taking on this permanent Hotel Director role?

    A: I feel very happy of course and privileged to take this position. It is an honour and I am proud as well.

  • Q: What have you learned as a Hotel Director aboard Azamara? And is there anything you would do differently once we go back to operating?

    A: You might know that I was Hotel Director before on a much smaller ship. I needed to adapt to the size and the different venues. I also learned the American leadership style which is in fact a lot friendlier. I got to know all these amazing crew members and the very family style atmosphere on board. And, there is always room for improvement for everybody, but in general I will continue to give my best for the crew and guests.

  • Q: Our guests really miss the crew and appreciate everything you do for them while we are at sea! What have you been doing to stay busy during this downtime?

    A: I probably will never be home for such a long period of time before I retire and I didn‘t want to waste it on the couch in front of the TV. I started taking on sailing and now have the license to sail and drive a motorboat on lakes and rivers. Momentarily I am studying for the motorboat license to go to sea. It is much harder as navigation is involved. I also took up drum lessons. I always wanted to try this and it is a lot of fun. I also travelled to Rome and Florence in September which was absolutely amazing. A close friend bought a house that needs to be renovated. I am helping there too. It is my first Christmas here at home for a long time. I decorated my apartment and have a Christmas tree. I baked a lot of cookies for friends and family. I am knitting too.

We're partnering with Homeless Project Scotland

Glasgow, Scotland has been home to our three Azamara ships for a few months now, and as a way to give back to the people of Glasgow, our crew onboard will be working with Homeless Project Scotland to donate food and supplies that will assist homeless and vulnerable families this holiday season.

2020 has taught us the importance of staying connected and helping each other whenever possible, that’s why I decided to support the community who has welcomed us with open arms.
