A Glimpse of Life on the River

Continue your voyage of a lifetime through the Amazon's mighty waterways and glide past the humble fishing village of Boca de Valeria, where the narrow Valeria River and Amazon flow in tandem. Tucked against Pará's border on the eastern tip of the state of Amazonas, this unassuming fishing village of 75 people gives you a taste of what it means to live a secluded riverside life. Stilts hold up Boca de Valeria's modest structures to protect from high water levels during the rainy season. Standing proudly at the center of the town and serving as a community hub is the Church of São Paulo, a Catholic church honoring Paul the Apostle, with an attached bell tower.

Riverboats, motorized fishing boats called voadeiras, and other man-powered watercrafts pepper the docks in one of the smallest ports of call in the world. One of 1,100 Amazonian tributaries, the verdant Valeria River showcases the world's largest lily pads, Victoria amazonica, that grow up to 10 feet in diameter and have 26-foot stalks submerged below the waterline. Cruising past this peaceful settlement with Azamara offers a window into the daily lives of Amazonian villagers.
