The maritime capital of Bulgaria
Varna is handsomely laid out along the contours of the bay of the same name. This cosmopolitan city with its leafy promenades is perfect for strolling amidst baroque, turn of the 20th century, and contemporary architecture. In 1972 buried treasure was found near the port, the oldest hoard of processed gold ever discovered – 3,010 objects from 280 tombs of an ancient necropolis. Bulgaria prides itself on a documented millennia-old legacy of viniculture - the wines of ancient Thrace were praised by Homer in both The Iliad and The Odyssey. You will no doubt want to taste and savor some yourself.
