A Haven for Outdoor Adventure
The largest of the British Virgin Islands and home of the capital, Road Town, Tortola has a way of making time feel like it’s standing still. Literally—don’t rely on the town clock in Road Town’s central square to stay punctual, the hands move on their own schedule. But that’s also the secret to really enjoying Tortola—the sooner you adjust to “island time” the sooner you can start to enjoy this topical paradise.
Be sure to bring your walking shoes and a sense of adventure when you visit Tortola. The island is a big draw for outdoor enthusiasts thanks to fantastic hiking trails in the lush interior hills. Head to the top of Sage Peak—Tortola’s highest point at 1,716 feet—and keep an eye out for placards along the trails that identify the local flora.
For a more laid back island experience, Tortola is home to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Relax on swashbuckling Smuggler’s Cove beach, dig your toes into the sand on Cane Beach—the most popular beach on the island—or combine relaxation with adrenaline by trying your hand at kite boarding or windsurfing on the Southern coast.
