Natural beauty meets Neoclassical elegance
Rolling hills blanketed by pine forests, sheltered coves with sandy beaches, and crystal clear waters await you in Spetses. Fittingly, the Venetians named the island “spezia”—meaning spice—due to its position on a major spice route. Untouched by commercial development, today this jewel off the Peloponnesian coast is a favorite getaway for the elite of Athens, and it’s bound to become one of yours too. It’s not uncommon to see flashy yachts moored alongside authentic wooden fishing boats, and boisterous fisherman selling their fresh catch next to coffee-sipping socialites on the seaside promenade.
Cars are banned in the only town on the island, so the best ways to get around are horse-drawn carriage, bicycle, moped, or your own two feet. Almost everything in town is within easy walking distance, but for a little challenge that leads to some big views, head up to Kastelli. Overlooking town, it’s the first settlement on Spetses and is home to striking Byzantine-era architecture.
Take some time in town to explore the grand Neoclassical mansions lining narrow cobblestoned streets, grab a bite at an authentic taverna, or soak up the warmth of the Mediterranean on a nearby beach. Agios Mamas beach is nestled in the town center, or head to the west side of the island to relax on Aghioi Anargyroi beach and explore the enchanting Bekiris Cave.
This island hideaway embraces its natural beauty and naval history, and offers a unique blend of seclusion and spectacle that’s sure to have you saying “Opa!”
