Glide Breathlessly Through Stunning Peaks.
Milford Sound is a place that captivates you in a way that only land carved by massive glaciers can. Land so spectacular, you may wonder if some more divine force is at play. Stunning sheer forested cliffs and impressive peaks rise thousands of feet above all around you, breaking the calm surface of the slick dark water. This is a place that maybe you haven’t heard of. But once you’ve seen it, you won’t believe it hasn’t been on your bucket list all along.
A long narrow meandering inlet leading approximately 16 kilometers (9.94 miles) in from the open sea, Milford Sound is a stunning natural wonder in the truest sense of the word. It was once described by Rudyard Kipling as the “eighth wonder of the world,” and while it hasn’t achieved official status, one glimpse and there’s no questioning that it should be.
Milford Sound is actually a fiord not a sound, sitting deep within the Fiordland National Park, which is in turn part of Te Wähipounamu (South West New Zealand), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by dense rainforest, gushing waterfalls of staggering heights and towering jagged peaks, Milford Sound is made up of truly spectacular landforms and is largely unspoiled and untouched. Cruising happens to be one of the best ways to see it, and unlike other travel days when we wish for sun, this is one item on your agenda that only becomes more beautiful when it rains.
Remote and rugged, serene and completely unforgettable, cruising through Milford Sound often makes people feel small in comparison. But the impact of this environment on your sense of wonder and on your soul will be decidedly huge.
