Voyage to the heart of Eastern macedonia
The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive in Kavala is the Byzantine castle built in 1425 that sits like a crown atop the city. The second thing you might notice is just how beautiful the scene before you is. Whitewashed, red-roofed buildings sit nestled amongst high stonewalls, with the azure-blue Aegean Sea lapping on the shore.
Now Kavala may be a little off-the-beaten-path, but locals have long treasured the city’s fantastic beaches—and Ammolofoi Beach is one of the most popular in the area. Fine sand and clear, shallow waters mean there is a straw-thatched umbrella calling your name, perfect for watching the sights, without having to fight the holiday crowds.
If you’re looking for a different kind of sightseeing, walk to the top of the castle or wander the streets of the colorful Panagia old quarter for plenty of shops and to get up close and personal with the massive aqueduct, Kamares (it’s kind of hard to miss!).
To explore even more, join us on a Cruise Global, Connect LocalSM shore excursion to discover the ruins of nearby Phillippi, where Octavian and Antony defeated Caesars’ murderers Brutus and Cassius, and the Apostle Paul baptized the first European Christian.
