The pearl of the orient
When you travel to Hong Kong, don’t forget to look up—way up— to see the 1,223 skyscrapers here (more than any other city in the world, if you’re counting). Just don’t try to find the fourth floor in any; the number is very similar to the Cantonese word for “die” so most buildings simply omit any floors that contain the number. For the best view of the iconic skyline, take a tram to the wok-shaped Peak Tower high atop Victoria Peak, which is also one of Hong Kong’s most exclusive neighborhoods. Better still, hop on the tram between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan for a cost-effective and authentic city-tour.
And if all that gazing and exploring has left you feeling peckish, Hong Kong is a foodie’s dream. Michelin-starred restaurants share walls with tiny dim-sum kitchens. But some of the most delicious morsels like curry fish meatballs, fried squid, and egg waffles can be found sizzling at one of the many street food vendors.
In Hong Kong east meets west in a fascinating juxtaposition of old and new. So whether this is your first visit or your 50th, you’ll find something to awaken all five senses.
