MONUMENTS AND MONASTERIES

Nestled in the cove of the Gulf of Igoumenitsa in the Ionian Sea, across from the island of Corfu, sits the coastal city of Igoumenitsa. This large vibrant port city is the gateway between Northern Greece and Western Europe, and is the capital city of the prefecture of Thesprotia.

The city has had many names and incarnations throughout different time periods—from ancient Titani, an important walled town of the Kingdom of Thesprotis during the 4th century BC to Grava during medieval and ottoman times. The city has been demolished by the Romans, liberated during the first Balkan War, destroyed again during World War II, and rebuilt from shambles. Thanks to rapid development in the ‘60s, Igoumenitsa has been transformed from a small seaside village of 500 residents into one of Greece’s most important ports.

Surrounded by pine-topped hills and beautiful beaches, visitors certainly love Igoumenitsa’s signature lush green forests and crystal blue waters. It’s also a lively city with lots of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Stroll the sandy stretches of Drepanos and Makrygiali. Explore the wonderful sycamore-lined seaside road and lovely park. Get in touch with the city’s ancient past at the castle of Doliani, located near the settlement of Geroplatanos, which dates back to the Classical period.
