The Perfect Summer Day in Portovenere

Monday, August 17, 2026
By Azamara Cruises

Part of our More Summer in Every Day series — one perfect day, one port, hour by hour.

Portovenere may be small, but there is a lot to discover between its harbor, historic lanes, rocky coastline, and the island just across the water.

With more time in port, the day can move at an easy pace: take in the first views of Portovenere and the Gulf of Poets, wander colorful streets, climb to centuries-old landmarks, taste the flavors of Liguria, and cross to Palmaria Island.

Here is one way a perfect summer day in Portovenere could unfold, hour by hour.

8:30 AM · Start Along the Harbor

Colorful waterfront buildings in Portovenere, Italy

Begin along Calata Doria, where tall, narrow houses in shades of yellow, pink, and orange line the harbor. Fishing boats and small ferries move across the water, while cafés begin setting tables for the day.

Walk the waterfront slowly before entering the old town. The colorful buildings facing the sea were historically part of Portovenere’s defenses, and passageways between them lead into the streets behind the harbor.

This is a good time to stop for an espresso and something simple for breakfast before the village gets busier.

Our Portovenere on Foot shore excursion offers a narrated walk through the village and time to appreciate its history, architecture, and local character.

10:00 AM · Walk to San Pietro

Head into Portovenere’s historic center and follow Via Capellini, the main street lined with shops, restaurants, and narrow side streets.

Continue toward Piazzetta Spallanzani and the Church of San Pietro, one of Portovenere’s most recognizable landmarks. Built on a rocky point above the Ligurian Sea, its black-and-white facade and open views make this one of the best places to pause and see the coastline.

Just below is Byron’s Grotto, a rocky cove named after the poet Lord Byron. You can see the rocky cove from the path near San Pietro before continuing uphill toward the village’s historic defenses.

An AzAmazing way to discover Portovenere

On featured sailings, Azamara guests can join AzAmazing Day in Portovenere, a complimentary three-hour experience created exclusively for Azamara guests that explores the history and character of this seaside village through its streets and local culture.

11:30 AM · Climb Toward Doria Castle

From San Pietro, follow the stone lanes uphill toward the Church of San Lorenzo and Doria Castle. The climb is part of the reward: each turn reveals a different view over the rooftops, harbor, Palmaria Island, and the Gulf of Poets.

Pause at San Lorenzo, a Romanesque church whose construction began in the 12th century, then continue toward the castle grounds. This upper part of town gives you a sense of how Portovenere developed between the sea and the hillside.

1:00 PM · Taste Liguria by the Water

Stop for lunch near the waterfront and try some of the flavors Liguria is known for.

Portovenere is especially known for muscoli, the local name for mussels. Try them with pasta or stuffed with breadcrumbs, cheese, garlic, parsley, and herbs. You’ll also find fresh seafood, focaccia, pesto, and farinata, a thin, savory chickpea pancake.

Find a table overlooking the harbor and enjoy a relaxed lunch with a local dish or two. Afterward, walk along Via Capellini and browse the shops for Ligurian olive oil, pesto, and other local specialties.

3:15 PM · Take a Boat to Palmaria Island

Rocky coastline and green hills of Palmaria Island

After lunch head across the narrow channel to Palmaria Island, the largest island in Liguria and part of the protected landscape surrounding Portovenere.

The island feels noticeably greener and quieter than the village. Mediterranean vegetation covers much of the landscape, while the western side rises into cliffs and sea caves. From the trails and shoreline, look back toward San Pietro and Portovenere’s waterfront from across the water.

For hikers

Azamara’s Palmaria Island Nature Hike shore excursion follows a local naturalist along the island’s shoreline and into the surrounding cliffs, offering a more active way to explore the landscape just across from Portovenere.

5:30 PM · Return for an Aperitivo

Return to Portovenere and find a waterfront table for an aperitivo, the Italian tradition of enjoying a pre-dinner drink with small bites.

Order a glass of local Ligurian wine or an Aperol Spritz, with olives, focaccia, or small bites. After a day of walking, this is the moment to sit, look back across the channel toward Palmaria, and decide what you want the evening to become.

If you’d rather keep exploring, take another walk through the historic center and browse the shops and restaurants along Via Capellini. The same lanes you saw in the morning feel different later in the day, with shops still open and the waterfront beginning to shift toward dinner.

Make sunset part of the day

Azamara’s Portovenere Sunset with Aperitif shore excursion pairs time in the historic village and around the Church of Saint Peter with an Italian aperitivo overlooking the Ligurian Sea.

8:00 PM · Enjoy Portovenere into the Evening

Stay ashore for dinner and enjoy Portovenere as the evening settles in. Find a table near the harbor and try a Ligurian favorite such as pasta with fresh pesto while enjoying the view.

After dinner, there’s still time to explore. Pick up a gelato, walk along the harbor, or head through the historic center for one last look at Portovenere in the evening.

Still here. Still discovering.
