Kotor is a destination that rewards taking your time.
The arrival alone feels like part of the adventure. As the ship passes through the narrow Verige Strait, steep mountains rise around a fjord-like bay, stone villages line the shore, and the fortified Old Town comes into view beneath the slopes. Nearby, the town of Perast and the islets of St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks appear to float against the still water.
With an early arrival and plenty of time to explore into the evening, there is no need to reduce Kotor to a few headline sights. Wander its stone lanes, climb for the view, settle in over a long Adriatic lunch, and return as the light softens over the bay.
Here is one way a perfect summer day in Kotor could unfold, hour by hour.
8:15 AM · The Sail-In
Set your alarm and find a place on the open deck before the ship enters the Verige Strait.
From here, the shoreline begins to draw closer. Mountain slopes rise from the water, church towers appear between clusters of stone houses, and small villages slip past one by one. As you approach Perast, look for the two islets just offshore: St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks, a small man-made island crowned by a church and museum.
From the deck of our small ship, the bay seems to surround you, with mountains rising on either side and historic villages tucked along the water. This is one morning when coffee tastes better outside.
9:50 AM · Espresso in the Old Town
Once ashore, step through the Sea Gate and into Kotor’s Old Town, a maze of stone lanes, tucked-away squares, churches, cafés, and centuries of maritime history.
Begin in Trg od Oružja, the Square of Arms, with an espresso and something warm from a nearby bakery. Try a flaky burek, or look for priganice, small pieces of fried dough traditionally served with honey or cheese.
Then let the streets lead the way. Watch shopkeepers prepare for the day, browse the market outside the walls, and pay attention to the smaller details carved into doorways and façades. You will also meet some of Kotor’s most recognizable residents: the cats that stretch across warm steps, windowsills, and quiet corners throughout the Old Town.
11:00 AM · Climb for the View
Behind the Old Town, Kotor’s fortifications climb dramatically up the mountainside toward San Giovanni Fortress.
The full ascent includes approximately 1,400 stone steps, but you do not need to reach the top for an unforgettable view. The Church of Our Lady of Remedy, partway along the route, provides a striking perspective over the terracotta rooftops, fortified walls, and the Bay of Kotor beyond.
Go before the warmest part of the day, bring water, and wear supportive shoes. Take your time on the uneven stone steps. The view deserves more than a quick photograph.

1:15 PM · Lunch With Nowhere to Be
Settle into a konoba tucked among the Old Town lanes and make lunch part of the day, rather than something squeezed between attractions.
Look for crni rižot, a black risotto prepared with cuttlefish ink, or choose grilled sea bream, locally cultivated mussels, and other seafood from the Adriatic coast. Njeguši prosciutto, a dry-cured ham associated with the mountain village of Njeguši, is another Montenegrin specialty worth adding to the table.
For wine, try Vranac, a full-bodied regional red, or Krstač, a crisp white grown in Montenegro. Then linger over local stories from the restaurant owner, another glass with new friends, and easy laughter as the afternoon unfolds around you.
Make lunch the experience

3:45 PM · Back Onboard to Reset
Return onboard for a change of pace.
Take a swim, find a shaded deck chair, stop for coffee at Mosaic Cafe, or simply look back toward the fortress walls you explored earlier. This is a chance to pause without bringing the day to an end.
Rest, refresh, and get ready to see Kotor from a different perspective. The town will still be waiting.
5:00 PM · Above Boka Bay
As the afternoon light begins to soften, join our Sunset Above Boka Bay excursion.
The two-hour experience pairs time in Kotor’s Old Town with a cable-car ascent toward Lovćen National Park. From above, the geography of the bay comes into focus: mountains, water, small coastal settlements, and the fortified town gathered below.
For more exploration, return to the Old Town and follow the waterfront or walk a short stretch near the fortifications as the daytime crowds begin to thin.
7:30 PM · Dinner in a Different Kotor
By evening, Kotor takes on a different rhythm.
The light fades from the mountaintops, restaurant tables fill the squares, and the stone lanes feel more atmospheric than they did earlier in the day. Find a courtyard table, order the catch of the day, and settle in for dinner beneath the walls.
There is nowhere else you need to be just yet.
8:30 PM · Still Here
Pause in the Square of Arms, follow one more quiet lane, or turn toward the mountain as lights begin to trace the fortifications above town. The same streets you walked that morning now feel entirely different.
This is the part of Kotor that a shorter visit can miss. And tonight, you are still here to see it.
That is what more time in port can make possible.
