Land of legends, come to life
Ancient ruins, white-washed walls, blindingly blue skies, and even bluer waters. Greece is truly the stuff of myths and legends. We depart from one of the world’s truly great cities, Istanbul, where you can visit the Hagia Sophia Mosque, once the greatest church in Christendom, or lose yourself in thousands of shops and 60 streets of the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world.
When we arrive at Kepez—a small seaside town located about two miles from the larger Canakkale—embark on a spectacular day trip such as an excursion to the ancient city of Troy to explore the archaeological excavations that have brought life to Homer’s Iliad. Next, in the off-the-beaten-path but extraordinarily beautiful Kavala, find a spot under a straw-thatched umbrella on one of the city’s treasured beaches, or walk to the top of the Byzantine castle built in 1425 that sits like a crown atop the city. History buffs will enjoy a late-night stay in Thessaloniki, the cultural capital of Greece and home to 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
From there, we enjoy another late stay in one of the country’s prettiest cities, Volos. Visit the six magical monasteries of Meteora, carved high atop giant rock columns, and tap into the mystique, peace, and harmony of this ethereal setting. Alternately, drop by one of the many famed fish tavernas to try freshly caught calamari perfectly paired with the local anise-flavored spirit tsipouro before departing for a luxurious day at sea. In the medieval city of Rhodes, we stay late so you can walk the streets of Old Town Rhodes at night, an absolute pleasure without the daytime crowds. There you can explore the more than 5,000 years of history, architecture, and culture of the beautiful village of Lindos.
Captivating Amorgos is the very picture of Greek island life. Go from the beachside tavernas in the village of Katapola to the charming town of Chora, where a short drive and an hour-long hike will be rewarded with the scent of thyme growing along the trail and the imposing Hozoviotissa Monastery awaits nearby. Next, in the town of Parikia on Paros, sip on a traditional wine from one of the oldest wine-making regions in the Mediterranean or explore the nearly 75 miles of beachy coastline. An overnight in vibrant and cosmopolitan Mykonos gives you time to stroll along the maze-like cobblestone streets exploring artists’ shops and enjoying a glass or two of ouzo, or embark on an excursion to the uninhabited island Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We end our mythical journey in Athens, Europe’s oldest city. Settled over 3,500 years ago, there are spectacular ruins aplenty to explore, such as the Parthenon.
