A Cruise Through the Land of Fire and Ice

Towering glaciers. Plunging waterfalls. Black-sand beaches. Verdant valleys. Iceland is a place of stark and otherworldly beauty. With its miles of breathtaking coastline, abundance of welcoming seaside towns, and relatively small geographic size, it’s also the perfect destination to explore by sea on an Azamara intensive voyage.

Our journey begins in Oslo, Norway’s famed “Tiger City”, where you can immerse yourself in the charming culture, world-class cuisine, and contemporary-meets-historic streetscapes of this cosmopolitan wonderland. From there, enjoy a luxurious day at sea before landing in Lerwick, a quaint town in the remote Shetland Islands that’s home to a unique blend of Scandinavian and Scottish culture.

From there, it’s onward to Torshavn, the capital city of the Faroe Islands named for the hammer-wielding Norse god of thunder, Thor. Don’t be fooled by Torshavn’s rustic exterior—behind those multi-colored turf-roofed houses and cobblestone alleyways lies a fascinating culture, more than your fair share of amazing food, and delightfully wild natural edges.

At our first Icelandic stop, Seydisfjordur, discover some of the country’s most unique architecture, natural beauty, and friendly faces. In Akureyri, a late-night stay gives you plenty of time to explore Iceland’s second-largest city, with its teeming population (by Icelandic standards, at least) of 18,000. Marvel at the snow-capped mountain peaks, stunning fjords, and lush countryside that seems to press in on the town from all sides.

If you love horses, you’re in luck—your next destination, Skagafjörður, is the only county in Iceland where horses outnumber people. Next up is Isafjordur, a remote fishing community with a quaint Old Town and a lively arts and music scene. From there, we sail off to Reykjavik, where another late-night stay gives you ample time to experience the cosmopolitan look and small-town soul of this beguiling city. Our next stop is the port of Heimaey, an island that owes its incredible beauty to volcanic activity, as evidenced by the 400 homes and buildings that were buried at what is now an active archaeological excavation known as the “Pompeii of the North.”

With a variety of world-class dining outlets, a luxurious spa, and a thoughtful, attentive staff and crew, you won't have trouble filling two days aboard before we dock in Skagen, Denmark. Here, you can delight in the wild landscape and quality of light that inspired the famous Skagen School of late-19th century artists.

Our voyage concludes in Copenhagen. Affectionately dubbed the “City of Spires”, Copenhagen is famed for its excellent quality of life and strong environmental ethos. Take a ride along the city’s extensive network of bike paths, or wander through the old town of this charming Danish city.
