Discover one of the world’s truly great medieval cities on this whirlwind tour of Bergen, found-ed in 1070 and the largest city in Norway until the 1830’s. At its core lies ancient Bryggen, where the wooden warehouses of Hanseatic merchants can still be seen on a drive along the waterfront. Stop at Fantoft, a reconstructed stave church with a long history, and visit the home of legendary composer, Edvard Greig, set on the shores of Nordaas Lake. From the city center, embark on a guided stroll into the past. Walk along the harbor to see homes dating back to Hanseatic days with their telltale gables pointing towards the beckoning sea. Wind through a honeycomb of narrow alleys, once roamed by ancient seafarers and now dotted with artisan workshops, art galleries and all variety of folkloric crafts. Take the opportunity to search for keepsakes before heading back to the ship.
Stroll through Bryggen, one of the world’s finest examples of medieval history and culture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
See Bryggen’s Hanseatic Assembly Rooms and old timbered houses facing the harbor front.
Visit Troldhaugen, the home of famed composer Edvard Grieg set on the shores of Nordaas Lake and Fantoft Stave Church.
