Voyage to the ends of the earth
Your stunning journey begins in the port of San Antonio, the gateway to Chile’s energetic capital city of Santiago. Stroll the bustling Alameda, the city’s main thoroughfare, to admire ornate 16th century architecture, or climb Santa Lucia hill and take in some of the best views of the city. After a luxurious day at sea, we arrive in the urban oasis of Puerto Montt. Surrounded by the breathtaking volcanoes, glacial lakes, and parks the Chilean Lake District is known for, visit the Angelmo Harbor Market to browse everything from freshly caught fish to rainbow-hued alpaca wool goods and don't miss Petrohue Falls, Osorno Volcano, and charming Puerto Varas.
Next, we wind our way up the southwestern coast to Puerto Chacabuco, a small town in Northeastern Chilean Patagonia with immense river valleys and a snowy backdrop of the Southern Andes. Venture inland to the town of Puerto Aysén, where you can shop for local arts and crafts or visit Río Simpson National Reserve, home to cougars and vast rugged landscape of pristine waterfalls, crystal-clear channels, gorges, and soaring peaks. We spend two glorious days at sea as we cruise through the steep, dramatic shores of the Chilean Fjords, a vast network of free, open channels that wind their way to the end of the earth. Then an overnight stay in a relaxed, diverse city perched on the western side of the Strait of Magellan: Punta Arenas. Meander through the main Plaza de Armas or take a boat to Magdalena Island and mingle with a colony of thousands of beautiful Magellanic Penguins at the Los Pingüinos Natural Monument. Prefer a change in perspective? Soar high above the Torres del Paine National Park in a chartered plane to take in the full breathtaking scope of its beauty.
When we sail the Beagle Channel, a 149-mile-long remote wonderland that borders both Argentina and Chile, there’s a good chance you’ll spot boisterous sea lion colonies sunning themselves on the shore. But this close to Antarctica, you’ll also be treated to the sounds of chunks of ice flows breaking off of glaciers and crashing into tranquil waters. We make our way to the end of the world (and the tip of Argentina), Ushuaia. We stay late so you can explore Tierra del Fuego, a national park with hiking trails and walking paths through thick forests. Here, you’ll also enjoy a surprising array of restaurants and bars, from Turkish cuisine to traditional Irish pubs. Be sure to sample chupe de centolla (king crab pie), a fresh local favorite, and don’t miss a one-of-a-kind ride aboard the vintage End Of The World Train for some magnificent landscapes.
Another blissful day at sea takes us to the remote, windswept Falkland Islands and the tiny capital of Port Stanley, where a hefty population of sheep and penguins well outnumber its human inhabitants. Observe the antics of five penguin species, admire colorful buildings, and snap a photo under the famed Whalebone Arch, made from the jawbones of two blue whales. With two days of fun and style aboard your boutique hotel at sea, relax and reflect on your journey before a late night soaking up the European charm and elegance of Montevideo, Uruguay. Spend the day exploring Old Town, strolling La Rambla, or savoring a parrillada, a local speciality of perfectly grilled meat and seafood.
Your adventure of a lifetime ends with an overnight stay in beautiful Buenos Aires. Enjoy the mansions and parks of Palermo, shop the chic boutiques of Soho and Hollywood, and take in some tango in La Boca. A perfectly grilled Argentine steak paired with a nice Malbec ends your voyage on a decidedly delicious note.
