MEDITERRANEAN ISLAND HOPPING

Where better to begin an intensive journey of the Mediterranean than in mythological Athens? To see a veritable “greatest hits” line-up, make your way to Vasilissis Amalias Avenue for the archaeological walk. Winding through the heart of the ancient city, the route leads to landmarks like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient Agora, Arch of Hadrian, and of course, the Acropolis.

Once the second largest city in the Roman Empire, Ephesus is waiting to show you everything it has to offer. There’s the Library of Celsus, still magnificent almost 2,000 years later; the Odeon, home of our “Ephesus: Back to Ancient Times” AzAmazing Evenings event; and the 24,000-capacity Great Theatre, where St. Paul used to preach.
Next on the itinerary is a late stay in the Cretan capital of Heraklion. Discover the many treasures at the Archaeological Museum, regarded as one of the most important museums in Greece. Be divinely inspired by St. Titus Cathedral, the 13th century Basilica of Saint Mark, and Agios Minas Cathedral.

After a day spent exploring your boutique hotel at sea, you’ll arrive for yet another late night in Valletta, Malta—and you’ll need the extra time—Valletta is one of the most concentrated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. Next you’ll sail to the seaside hotspot of Giardini Naxos on the shores of Sicily. It’s the perfect place to take in views of the stunning Mount Etna or enjoy an afternoon riposo (an Italian siesta) on the beach.

The romantic cliffside city of Sorrento is your next stop, followed by a late night in Olbia, an off-the-beaten-path port on the Italian island of Sardinia. It’s a gateway to the Costa Smeralda (or “Emerald Coast”) of the island, where beautiful beaches and hip restaurants are endless.

In the morning you’ll arrive on the idyllic island of Corsica. Enjoy Porto Vecchio, where Corsica's two most famous beaches, Palombaggia and Santa Guili await.
Your journey concludes in Rome—Italy's passionate and picturesque capital. Here, in the Eternal City, treat yourself to a refreshing aperitivo (a drink and snacks) and embrace the dolce vita lifestyle.

Kusadasi has many charms, but let’s talk Turkey: The star attraction is Ephesus. Once the second largest city in the Roman Empire, its marble-made Arcadian Street stretches from the 24,000-capacity Great Theatre (where St. Paul used to preach) to the harbor. Nearby sites include the Temple of Artemis, Basilica of St. John, and House of Virgin Mary, where Mary is supposed to have spent her last days.

As the largest city on the isle of Crete, with a history that dates back to the 9th century, Heraklion has seen its share of travelers over the millennia. It’s been ruled by the Arab, Venetian, and Ottoman empires. It’s hosted international athletes during the 2004 Olympics. And now, as a new port of call for Azamara, Heraklion welcomes you with a wealth of timeless experiences.

Everywhere you look in Valletta, there’s wonder to behold. Look down in St. John’s Co-Cathedral and discover “The most beautiful floor in the world.” Look up while wandering the streets and see colorful balconies filled with locals going about their day. Look beyond the city’s small size (less than half a square mile) and you’ll find a blend of old and new architecture that’s not to miss.

For rest and relaxation, Giardini Naxos is just the ticket, with a coast that seems to stretch on for miles. To the left looms Mount Etna, Italy’s largest active volcano. Hikes to the top are only advised for experienced hikers (dress warmly!), but the Silvestri Craters are fun to explore at any skill level. Looking out from Sorrento is the isle of Capri. The island is divided into two main parts, Capri and Anacapri. Capri is full of Italian luxury, with designer stores and five-star hotels lining the streets, while Anacapri is slightly more down-to-earth. Take a relaxing chair lift ride to the very top of the island, as the views are jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Olbia has been inhabited since the 8th century BC, but a recent archaeological discovery of 24 shipwrecks has landed it in the spotlight. The name Olbia means "happy town", though its past has been difficult, with the city destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout its history. Of course that makes it all the more interesting, as every empire has left something of value behind for you to see.
