Immerse Yourself in Japan
Before departing Tokyo, enjoy breakfast at a kissaten—or 'kissa' for short—a coffee shop inspired by traditional teahouses that dates back to the early or mid-20th century. After a relaxing day sailing aboard your boutique hotel at sea, we explore Aomori where year-round festival floats fill the waters near the Nebuta Museum WA RASSE museum. Hirosaki Castle, constructed in 1611 and surrounded by over 2,600 cherry trees, is another must-see before sailing to Akita, home to the Shirakami -Sanchi Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Kanpuzan Observatory.
Next is Niigata, the largest city on Honshu's Sea of Japan coast and Kanazawa, a buzzing city center, and of course—the region’s best rice and saké. Then, we sail into the fishing port of Sakaiminato to see Matsue Castle crossing the Korea Strait for a late stay in Busan, where ancient culture and modern life merge in South Korea's second-largest city. Buddhist temples are in abundance, or you can take a Korean cooking class, visit the local fish market or participate in a Korean tea ceremony. Savor it raw, the way locals love at the locally-loved Jacky’s Seafood.
A late stay allows you to witness Kitakyushu from the most spectacular perspective the city has to offer, beginning with a journey aboard our Mt. Sarakura Cable Car tour.. With another late stay, in Hiroshima, hop on the Shinkansen Bullet Train to the Floating Shrine of Miyajima. Next, unwind while cruising the inland Sea of Japan. With emerald waters and over 3,000 volcanic and granite islands dotting the coast, you'll enjoy a peaceful day best spent on one of our outdoor decks, or your very own veranda before an exciting late night in the old castle town of Takamatsu. To get a sense of its history, visit Tamamo-koen Park. The 16th century Takamatsu Castle had been destroyed, but there’s still plenty to explore: ruins, water moats, and classic Japanese-style yagura or turrets.
Next up is an overnight in Kobe. Known for the beef delicacy that bears its name, venture to Osaka or explore Kyoto & Nara, Arashiyama, Golden Pavillion and Fushimi Inari Shrine. In Shimizu, gaze in awe at Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest peak, overlooking this beautiful town, then conclude your intensive Japanese voyage with an overnight stay back in Tokyo. Tour the best ramen and sushi restaurants, visit Akihabara Electric Town to discover cutting-edge gadgets and games, and scale the Tokyo City View—a breathtaking observation deck on the 52nd floor of Mori Tower.
