Azamara Journey
Sailing: January 29, 2022

Discover what lies beneath the rich volcanic surface

If you close your eyes and picture the perfect island paradise, you’ll likely conjure the characteristic scenery of the Canary Islands. But this intensive voyage through this incredible archipelago will open your eyes to discoveries you might not expect: extraordinary volcanic peaks, culinary delights, and a stunning diversity of landscapes.

We begin in Gran Canaria, a small island with a large variety of attractions. Next, on Tenerife, daydream on the beach, learn about the island’s ancient inhabitants at the archaeological sites of Guanches, or explore the mysterious step pyramids at Güímar. We stay late so you’ll be able to stargaze the dark starlit sky before sailing on to Los Cristianos, once an old fishing port, now a relaxing beach town. Visit the old town or sip a refreshing drink on a breezy terrace. On La Gomera, take in the island’s rugged terrain and incredible views at Les Roques, four enormous, ancient volcanic chimneys. Feeling brave? Visit the Mirador de Abrante, a famous walkway with a glass floor that gives you the feeling of walking over the cliff it’s perched on, while your feet remain firmly planted on safe ground.

In La Estaca, there is just as much diversity in things to do as there is in the natural setting. Hike the famous Camino de Jinama, an old route once used by the island’s inhabitants and be sure to try a quesadilla, which is not what you think, but a delicious dessert made with the island’s traditional cheese, eggs, aniseed, lemon peel, sugar, and cinnamon. In La Palma, experience La Caldera de Taburiente, the island's greatest natural treasure, or dive crystal clear waters to explore the caves and arches of one of three marine reserves in the Canary Islands.

A beautiful overnight stop in Madeira breaks up your Canary Island adventure but doesn’t ease up on the sunny island charm. Visit the 16th century Cathedral of Funchal (Sé), take a cable car ride up to Monte in the hills overlooking Funchal, and if you’re feeling adventurous, try a traditional wicker toboggan sledge ride down the steep streets.

After a luxurious day at sea, we return for an overnight at our last memorable port Gran Canaria where you can go to the old historic city center of Vegueta, visit the Caldera de Bandama in Gran Canaria’s wine country, or head to Tejeda for the rock formation of Roque Nublo and spectacular views.
