Embark on a journey to Edam — home to the famous cheese — where you’ll enjoy the hospitality of a local family at one of the oldest residences in the city. Edam grew from a 12th century fishing settlement into a prosperous shipbuilding town that has produced many world-famous ships — including the “Halve Maan”, which Henry Hudson sailed to the East Indies. (He didn’t quite make it — landing in Manhattan instead.) Edam’s history as one of the most important commercial centers in the Netherlands is evident in its striking 17th century architecture, well-preserved gables, and bridges. You’ll visit a house built in 1597. Your hostess, born and raised in the residence, will show you the 17th century painted ceiling, and give you a tour of the home’s floating basement, pointing out remnants of rare delft blue tiles. Then, enjoy coffee and apple pie while listening to stories of the home’s history.
