Dazzling turquoise waters ebb and flow against brilliant white sands. A quiet fishing town on Busuanga Island in the warm Western Pacific islands of the Philippines, Coron’s black limestone cliffs give way to coral sand beaches and harbor some of the best diving, snorkeling, and unspoiled land in Asia.

This small town is mostly inhabited by the semi-nomadic Tagbanua; however, the beautiful nearby islands and sunken coral covered fleet of Japanese war vessels draw seasoned travelers year round. Motorcycle, scooter, or mountain bike to really get to know Coron and its people. Hike through jungle and up the 700 steps of Mount Tapyas for a panoramic view of the harbor spread out before you. Kayak Coron’s virgin coastline, along the twisting mangrove forests of Kingfisher Park, searching for hidden coves and local fauna. Explore the Market Pier to try specialties like fresh roasted kasoy (cashew) nuts and exotic fruit, or stop into a local watering hole for a cold San Miguel and some Palawan-style BBQ.

There’s a world of beauty and adventure right off the coast of Coron, including an island of the same name. An authentic bangka boat is the best way to explore the surrounding islands. Head to Coron Island to swim its azure inland lakes, take a photo on the towering rocks at Twin Lagoon, and relax on a bamboo raft. Banol, Malcapuya, and CYC Island all offer spectacular beach lounging, powdery sand, tropical flowers, and tamarind trees. Throw on your scuba gear or take a freediving lesson, and head to Tangat Island for the unique experience of wreck diving the site of a major World War II battle between the U.S. and Japan. At Siete Pecados, snorkel amongst soft and hard coral, and spy several species of fish, sea serpents—even sea turtles. A true hidden gem, Coron is the island getaway you never knew existed.
