A COUNTRY REBORN, A CITY REVITALIZED
Our African cruises take you to the continent's western coast. Here, bordered by half a moon-shaped bay shaded by baobab trees, Luanda shines like a beacon. The capital city of Angola, Luanda is a metropolis that connects the region’s colonial past with its bright future.
Once ashore, explore Baixa de Luanda (The Old City), where narrow streets lined with classic colonial buildings paint a picture of the Portuguese influence on the city. Then make your way to the Fortress of São Miguel, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1576, where embellished wall tiles and artifacts detail the history of the city.
Not far from the Fortress, the Marginal Promenade is the perfect spot for a stroll along the Luanda Bay toward Ilha do Cabo—a popular sandspit known simply as Ilha to locals. This is the place to go if you’re looking for a delicious meal accompanied by beautiful ocean views. While you’re here, be sure to try Mufete, a traditional (and hearty) Angolan meal, and Muzongué, a soup popular with tourists and locals alike. Luanda is also well known for its steaks, and it’s almost unheard of to visit a restaurant without steak entrées on the menu.
