Voyage to A Gem of an Island with Nary a Vehicle to Be Found
Actors, artists, musicians, and travelers have all been drawn to Hydra over the years. Featuring a stunning harbor, the island town is uniquely car-free (save for a lone fire truck). No taxis, no scooters—just donkeys and your own two feet. Luckily, you won’t have to go too far to discover the many charms of this isle.
Hydra has a bit of a reputation as an artist’s haven (the inspiring surroundings may have something to do with that!), and there are many galleries and shops featuring one-of-a-kind items by local designers.
The area around the harbor is perfect for another popular Hydrian pastime: people watching. Make like the locals and settle in at one of the cafés overlooking the azure-blue sea and nurse a cup of strong coffee while you watch the comings and goings of the day.
Meander toward Spilla, a popular swimming destination on the west side of town and stretch out on the rocks beside the water to soak up some sun. Or explore the village of Mandraki (population 11), a leisurely 30-minute walk from town. But wherever you go, just be sure to keep an eye on where you’re stepping to avoid any “donkey exhaust”.
