Journey to the UNESCO World Heritage Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island, known for its “floating” torii gate. Your adventure begins with a scenic ferry ride. As you approach Miyajima Island, take in the full scene from a distance: the red torii gate that appears to float, serene ocean, lush mountains. The red torii gate archways are symbols of the shrine, which dates back to the 6th century. Current construction dates back to the 12th century and exhibits great technical skill and artistic acumen. Photograph the stunning 50-foot tall torii gate and learn about how the Shinto architects sought a balance between the natural world and human structures. The island has been a Shinto sacred site for centuries, and the seventeen buildings reflect Japanese Shinto aesthetic standards that seek harmonious balance with nature.
