Step into the stalactite caves of Neptune's Grotto. Chanced upon by local fisherman in the 18th century and named for the Roman god of the sea, this spacious, sprawling complex of caves lies at the base of the 65 million year-old Capo Caccia cliffs just outside Alghero. Clamber down 654 steps, carved into the cliffside and called the escala del cabirol or “goats' steps” to reach the cave's entrance about three feet above sea level. Those who are brave enough can peer over the cobalt water to glimpse Foradada Island, a huge rock island that broke away from the cliff eons ago. Once inside the caves, a narrow pathway opens up to a series of caverns, wider passages, clear lakes, deep wells and tunnels. A knowledgeable guide, experienced in navigating the cliff and caves, shares the history of the region and explains fascinating scientific facts about this extraordinary little corner of the world tucked into a cliff.
Descend a carved staircase in the Capo Caccia cliifs to enter Neptune's Grotto at sea level.
Enter the grotto's system of caves, passages, lakes and tunnels with an experienced guide.
