Follow a local guide on a nature walk that winds through a breathtaking section of Fort Abercrombie State Park. You’ll trek through forests of moss-laden spruce trees and pass along fields adorned with colorful wildflowers that make fantastic photo opportunities. Part of your hike opens up onto the coastline where a variety of seabirds can be spotted. It’s also quite common to sight whales in the waters just offshore. Throughout the journey, your guide will provide insight about the natural landscape and offer up stories of Kodiak’s World War II days. The path winds past Allied military bunkers that still stand as reminders of Kodiak’s importance to the securing the North Pacific during the war. Stop at one of the largest bunkers in the park, the Miller Point Gun Placement, to snap a few keepsake photos before continuing through the forest to reach the park headquarters.
