Discover the Historic Past of Pylos, Greece
The beautiful seaside town of Pylos has a long and impressive history. Dating back to Neolithic times, it was a kingdom during the Bronze Age, a setting for Homer’s Iliad, and the site of the Battle of Pylos during the Peloponnesian War in 425 BC.
It’s been conquered by everyone from the Latin Empire and the Ottoman Empire to the Venetians and the Russians. And to this day, Pylos remains a destination that attracts travelers from all over the world.
Naturally, there are lots of historic sites to explore, such as the castles of Niokastro, Navarino, Methoni, and Palaiokastro. And on the rock where Palaiokastro was built, you can go into Nestor’s Cave, the legendary cave where Hermes hid the 50 cattle he stole from Apollo.
For more modern-day pursuits, head to one of the many gorgeous beaches (Voidokilia, Romanos, and Divari/Golden Beach are standouts). Enjoy a beverage under the shade of the huge plane trees in Three Admiral’s Square. And visit one of the local waterfront restaurants to try traditional Peloponnesian dishes accompanied by olives and cheeses like sfela, kefalotyri, and mizithra. Opa!
