Experience Easter Island
Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island, is a territory of Chile and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the south pacific, 2290 miles offshore. One of the most isolated places on Earth, it’s home to the famed Moai – monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island between the years 1400 and 1650 A.D.
Here you can visit Rano Kau, Easter Island’s largest volcano and one of the most impressive natural settings in the world. Be sure to check out the lagoon inside its crater—the panoramic view of the ocean from here will blow your mind.
In the town of Hanga Roa, amble along it’s little streets until you come across a quaint local restaurant or a craft shop. If a day spent relaxing on the beach is more your speed, a visit to Anakena is a must. Enjoy the turquoise waters, white coral sand, and sit in the shade of a palm tree with a view of the Moai.
For history buffs, you’ll want to explore Orongo, a ceremonial village made up of 53 houses built with flat stones that hides rocks with petroglyphs that symbolize fertility: the birdman Tangata Manu and the Make Make, the main divinity for the Rapa Nui culture.
