Explore the Charming Port of Aegina, Greece
According to mythology, Aegina got its name from a nymph who Zeus fell in love with and spirited away to this tiny Greek isle just off the coast of Athens. Once you experience all of Aegina’s attractions on a cruise with Azamara, you’ll no doubt fall in love with her charms, too!
In Aegina’s main town (referred to as “the center” by locals), pink and white houses cluster around the harbor, while the remains of ancient ruins, small villages, and orchards of pistachios, olives, and almonds adorn the hillsides.
Some of the more outstanding monuments and monasteries include the Temple of Aphaia, Monastery of Saint Nektarios, Sanctuary of Apollo Delphinios, and Paleochora. If you’d like to take a break from the archaeological explorations, there are plenty of beaches to discover—be it the quiet and pebbly Perdika, the warm waters of Souvala, or the bustling beachfront bars and restaurants of Agia Marina.
Naturally, fresh fish and seafood are popular on local menus here, as well as roasted eggplant and paximadia bread, paired with Retsina wine or a finishing glass of ouzo. And as the island is one of Europe’s top producers of pistachios, be sure to pick up a jar of creamy pistachio butter as a delicious memento of your time spent on Aegina with Azamara!
