OverviewHide
Journey right off the beaten track to a special part of the Bay of Plenty region between the Kaingaroa Forest and the foothills of the Te Urewera National Park. Surrounded by dense native bush, deep flowing rivers and lush farmlands - in this rustic and serene corner of New Zealand lies a small township named Murupara where you will discover a history and a culture not yet touched by the hand of commercialism. At Rainbow Mountain, a kaumatua (esteemed elder) will board your coach and welcome you into the tribal lands of Ngati Manawa (The Eel People), before regaling you with stories of the area. During the tour learn about the iwi’s ancestors, land settlement and spiritual connection with the eel. Explore hidden ancient Maori Rock art, carbon dated 400 years before the Great Migration. Enjoy a traditional welcome onto a marae, enjoy a cultural performance followed by a tour inside the elite, carved meeting house. Journey past historic sites and hear the stories of how Ngati Manawa ancestors secured its tribal boundaries and protected a land rich in resource and breath-taking beauty. Visit a waterfall and site where the highly valued eel departs the rivers on it's journey out to sea for spawning. Learn how the tribe protects the eel, a main source of food for the people, and ensure it's survival to this day - despite the large man made dams built in their path. Join your hosts at the lake edge lodge - a genuine, modern, Maori family waiting to warmly welcome you. View the lifting of the traditional ground cooked hangi meal, before enjoying a full buffet feast followed by dessert. Afternoon activities include weaving, learning the haka, poi and mau rakau (stick games). Spend time with the Ngati Manawa people and hear how your visit to this region helps make a hugely positive impact on the people and the community.
