Start at the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Park and Museum to learn about the Battle of Okinawa, which was the largest amphibious assault of World War II and took place just months before Japan surrendered to the Allied powers. Peruse monuments with the names of all the soldiers who died in combat. Afterwards, take a walk through the tranquil Peace Memorial Park and offer a prayer for peace at the memorial statue. Continue on to the former Navy Underground Headquarters, a man-made cave which functioned as operational headquarters during the Battle of Okinawa. View the chief commander's room, where Minoru Ota and his staff commited suicide to avoid surrender after deciding Japan would be defeated. Walk through the headquarters and see evidence of the violent conflict, including scars from blast mortars. OK5L
