Explore a mountainside city of medieval ruins that has become known as the “Wonder of
Morea”. Today, the once bustling churches and palaces of Mystras stand abandoned to the
annals of time. What’s more, the ever- encroaching vegetation is slowly swallowing what
remains of this archeological wonder, making this opportunity all the more fascinating. Mystras is built around a castle fortress erected by William II of Villehardouin in the year 1249 to
withstand attacks by the Byzantines. This effort proved futile, as soon after completion Mystras was conquered and fell under Byzantine rule. Today, what remains is a city of ghosts high in the forested mountains. Explore these ruins highlighted by the Metropolis Old Cathedral, dating from 1309 and dedicated to St. Demetrios. Observe its ornate frescos and brilliant relief of a two-headed eagle, proud emblem of Byzantium. Discover Mystras, a city lost to time and yet alive with history.
