162,000 Years of History
With one of the world’s most pleasant climates, Mossel Bay is a true treasure found on South Africa’s Garden Route. Bounded by lush natural beauty, this town at the tip of the African continent is beloved for its beachy atmosphere and renowned for its connection to early human life. Start where it really all began at the Point of Human Origins along the Cape St. Blaize trail. This rugged seaside cave is home to early evidence of human behavior dating back 162,000 years. Keep hiking along this breathtaking trail and you’ll reach Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse. Constructed in the 19th century, the views from the top can’t be missed from the only rock lighthouse on the South African coast.
For more leisurely pursuits, the beaches in Mossel Bay are a must, and The Point promenade links all of the best ones. Santos Beach is ideal for a stroll and swim after dinner (many of Mossel Bay’s best restaurants are close by), and for excellent whale watching, head to Dana Bay Beach.
In search of unforgettable safari experiences? You’ll find them in spades around here. Botlierskop Private Game Reserve gets you up close to South Africa’s “Big Five”, as well as 200 bird species. For a truly unique encounter, head to an ostrich farm to see large flocks of ostriches at different stages of development and sample some wonderful South African wines.
