EXPERIENCE THE MARVELOUS MEDITERRANEAN ISLANDS

Where better to begin an intensive journey of the Mediterranean than in Athens? Home of ancient ruins like the Parthenon, Acropolis, and the Temple of Zeus, Athens is also a bustling modern metropolis in its own right. From Athens, we arrive in remarkable Kuşadası, Turkey for a late stay. A short drive from port brings you to Ephesus, home of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis, and impressive ruins that are a testament to the importance of this ancient city whose power once rivaled Rome.

After a late evening enjoying Turkish delights, you’re off to the jewel of the Greek islands, Santorini. A late stay here means plenty of time to head south to the 3,500-year-old Minoan town Akrotiri to get a glimpse into Santorini’s storied (and explosive) past. Your immersive experience continues with another late stay, this time in the largest city on the isle of Crete, Heraklion. Covering 5,500 years of Cretan history, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is filled with ancient artifacts, pottery, sculptures, wall paintings, and a Minoan collection showcasing true masterpieces.

Then it's a full day of relaxation at sea before arriving in Giardini Naxos, Italy. This seaside hotspot on the shores of Sicily is the perfect place to take in views of the stunning Mount Etna or enjoy an afternoon riposo (an Italian siesta) on the beach, or pop over to get a true taste of la dolce vita in the nearby coastal paradise of Taormina.

The romantic cliffside city of Sorrento is your next stop, followed by a day in the Sardinian port of Olbia. A gateway to the Costa Smeralda (or “Emerald Coast”) of the island, a late-stay here provides hours of beautiful beaches and hip dining opportunities.

Next on the itinerary is the idyllic island of Corsica. Enjoy Porto Vecchio, where Corsica's two most famous beaches await, and later head to the Old Town’s Place de la République for its lively nightlife, bars, and restaurants. After a whirlwind few days of fun and sun, we arrive in the Spanish Isles. In Mahón, a hike up El  Toro offers the best views of this laidback Balearic hideaway. A late stay here provides time to dig into the island’s prehistoric past, or simply take in the natural wonders of this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In Palma de Mallorca, explore the world’s largest underground lake at the Drach Caves and put your game to the test at the Son Gual Golf Course.

We conclude our voyage in brilliant Barcelona. End your journey in this beautiful, bustling city, discovering its dynamic architecture and artistic treasures at your own pace.

Kusadasi has many charms, but let’s talk Turkey: The star attraction is Ephesus. Once the second largest city in the Roman Empire, its marble-made Arcadian Street stretches from the 24,000-capacity Great Theatre (where St. Paul used to preach) to the harbor. Nearby sites include the Temple of Artemis, Basilica of St. John, and House of Virgin Mary, where Mary is supposed to have spent her last days.

The capital, Fira, clings to the rim of the caldera 900 feet above the sea. Take the cable car, or giddy up on a donkey to climb the 588 steps to the top. Hike to nearby Oia, a quintessential Greek village. Head south to the 3,500-year-old Minoan town Akrotiri. Often called Greece’s answer to Pompeii, the well-preserved ruins provide a glimpse into Santorini’s storied (and explosive) past.

And now, as a new port of call for Azamara, Heraklion welcomes you with a wealth of timeless experiences.
