Discover Namibia's fascinating ghost town, Kolmanskop, located in Namibia's diamond mining "forbidden territory." In 1908, diamonds were found near Kolmanskop, leading to a diamond rush in the area. Kolmanskop became a bustling German town, boasting a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, theatre, sports hall, casino, bakery, butcher, and the first x-ray station in the southern hemisphere. Yet, the drop in diamond sales after World War I, as well as the discovery of richer diamond deposits in Oranjemund, led to the rapid decline of the town. Stroll this crumbling ghost town, marveling at magnificent homes turning to dust. The interiors of the houses have been invaded by the desert sand, creating opportunities for truly haunting photographs. The town was the backdrop for films including The King is Alive and Dust Devil. Learn about the town's history and about the diamond industry during a guided walk through this abandoned ghost town.
