Castles, Lochs, and Whisky: Discover The Best of Scotland
Your immersive, Scotland-intensive journey begins in Amsterdam, followed by a relaxing day at sea before your early morning arrival in Edinburgh. Here, an overnight stay followed by a late departure means two full days to explore. Head to Edinburgh’s historic heart for a walk down The Royal Mile, explore Edinburgh Castle—home to the crown jewels and sweeping views—and see Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence when in Scotland. The world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a must-see, featuring performers and musicians from around the globe.
The next morning, arrive in Aberdeen for the first of five late-night stays in a row. You’ll have plenty of time to play a round of golf at the sixth-oldest course in the world, visit Dunnottar Castle—a ruined medieval fortress perched on a cliff—or sample a pint of hand-drawn ale at the Prince of Wales. Walk the bustling, mile-long Union Street to peruse high-street shops and venture into local independent stores. Explore the spirit of Aberdeen’s maritime history in Footdee—a traditional fishing village full of quirky outbuildings. Next, we sail to Invergordon for another late night of tumbling waterfalls, rushing rivers, magnificent gardens, and serene lochs—including Loch Ness and its famous resident. Here, you’ll discover over 1,000 years of history at the dramatic Urquhart Castle, offering stunning views of Loch Ness.
We’ll continue on for yet another late stay, this time in Lerwick. Discover the capital of the Shetland Islands, home to a unique blend of Scandinavian and Scottish culture. Rocky cliffs and rich farmland are yours to explore on over 100 islands that embrace a slower, more authentic pace of life. Then it’s on to two final late nights. First, visit the fertile fields, heather-cloaked moors, and lakes of Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, followed by the quaint independent bookstores, homestyle bakeries, and traditional pubs of Stornoway in the Hebrides. You may even be greeted in Gaelic.
Oban, a tiny port town with an adventurous heart, is next. Get outside and explore the Scotland of your dreams by gondola or train, and sample a dram of whisky before an overnight in the cosmopolitan city of Glasgow. Here, see storied landmarks like Glasgow & Pollock House, Culzean Castle, and Glasgow Cathedral. Finally, you’ll disembark in the fair city of Dublin, Ireland. Stay awhile and ride to a stunning view atop a brand new observation wheel.
