Visit the city renowned as the only one Alexander the Great could not conquer. Termessos is one of the best preserved of the ancient cities in Turkey and stands at a height of more than 1,000 meters in the Taurus Mountains. Alexander referred to it as an "eagle's nest," and the city was accepted by the Romans in 70 BC as an independent ally rather than absorbed into the Roman Empire. A winding climb via coach through steep, forested slopes delivers you to crumbling temples, defense walls and watchtowers. You'll also see a bouleterion that served as a council house, a temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, the odeon that housed popular spectator sports and a necropolis scattered with ancient tombs. The most striking edifice, however, has to be the unforgettable, 4,000-seat Hellenic-style theater built into a precipitous canyon and connected to the agora by a large, arched entrance. After Termessos it's on to the Antalya Archaeological Museum, one of the country's largest, with 13 exhibition halls, an open-air gallery and important exhibits from from Antalya Province.
