Discover the immutable charms and rich history of Marseille, one of France’s most colorful ports. Drive past French sidewalk cafes and local markets clamoring with people eager to get first dibs on the days catch. Meanwhile, rustic fishing boats bob gently in the harbor, their tight rigging clanging now and again. Continue along the coast to view the famed cliffs of Marseilles and begin a winding trip up to the summit of La Garde. Here stands the Romanesque-Byzantine grandeur of Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica with its magnificent domes, multi-colored stone and golden mosaics. Take it all in, then drive through the Marseille shopping district en route to Longchamp Park, a 19th-century complex of stately museums, elegant fountains and vibrant gardens. Stop for photos beside the park’s great stone lions before heading back to the Old Port for some free time to shop and explore.
Drive through the Old Port of Marseille where the city’s Greek founders came ashore in 600 BC.
Follow the rugged coastline dominated by the sheer cliffs of the Marseille massif with tiny islands lying just offshore.
Travel to the top of the hill of La Garde to experience the majestic architecture and design of the Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica.
