Far north of the Arctic Circle, in Alta, lies one of the northernmost sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It's the richest concentration of prehistoric rock art (petroglyphs) made by hunter-gatherers in Northern Europe. To date, more than 6,000 carvings and paintings have been discovered at the head of the Alta Fjord, indicating that this area held an important role as a ritual meeting place for several thousand years, from 7000 – 2000 years ago. It's believed that the rock carvings were part of the prehistoric people's rituals and beliefs with the panels depicting reindeer, bears, elks, whales, seabirds, and humans, playing drums, skiing, in various activities, such as rituals, communication, trapping, fishing, and hunting. They almost seem to make the Stone Age come alive! Numerous panels are connected by a 3km-long pathway system. The museum has a new permanent Rock Art exhibition, as well as revolving temporary exhibitions.
