The Panama Canal is one of the world’s great engineering feats. It has saved millions of hours of travel time and dollars in wasted expense. It is also a cool place to visit, learn about how it works, how and why it came about, and how technology has changed over the last century. But nothing compares to going through it via ship and experiencing it for yourself. Plus you get to see and do a whole lot more when you take a Panama Canal cruise.
Panama City is a nice modern city with a few fun things to do. A visit to the Panama Canal is a must but it won’t last more than an hour. You’ll go, watch a short film, take some photos and that’s it. You don’t get to experience the canal itself. That’s where a cruise comes into play.
When you do a Panama Canal cruise, you get to experience actually going through the canal and seeing it up close and personal. You get to see the ins and outs of how it works and gain a new appreciation for how much of a feat it really is. Plus you get to visit so many other great ports of call in Central America, the Caribbean, or even South America or Mexico depending on the cruise.
For instance, you can visit multiple ports on the west coast of Costa Rica, Panama, and other Central American countries before you enter the canal itself. Then you’ll have the ability to visit Eastern Central America and into the Caribbean. Or perhaps down to Cartagena or San Andres in Colombia.
Cruising the Panama Canal allows you to see and experience the canal itself but not be limited to seeing only the canal and Panama City. You get a wider exposure to the region but get a life experience going through the canal.
I have personally been to the Panama Canal 3 times and visiting it is kind of anticlimactic as you see it but you don’t really understand how important it actually is. Being in it will take care of that and give you the understanding necessary plus allow you to see more for your money. I like that!
