The world is full of fascinating stories — whether shared in books, on the silver screen, or over a pint in the pub. And, for many, the best stories always include a little thrill or twist that chills. That's why we love to shine a light on some of the paranormal parts of ports we call on and the scary stories you'll hear when you visit. These 10 cities are home to rumors of ghosts, hauntings, and more. So get ready to learn about the things that go bump in the night and — perhaps — experience them for yourself on an overnight stay.
Venice is famous (or infamous) for being one of the most haunted cities in the world! Well known for its narrow alleys, canals, and small islands, Venice's bewildering topography and a long history of macabre murders and ghastly illness make it an ideal setting for a spooky story. During your visit to Venice, explore some of the smaller islands surrounding the city. They've housed mass graves, prisons, and an insane asylum (said to be the eternal home of a mad doctor).
Venice is also home to one of the most famous haunted houses in the world: Palazzo Dario. Fittingly dubbed "The house that kills," many residents of the 15th-century Venetian Gothic palace have met truly terrible ends over the years. In fact, it's said that anyone who stays in the home for more than 20 days is all but certain to experience an unfortunate, untimely demise. One such guest was the legendary bass player of The Who, John Entwistle, who suffered a fatal heart attack one week after renting Palazzo Dario for a vacation.
Our suggestion? Best to view the house from the canals — but don't linger too long!
It should come as no surprise that the birthplace of Bram Stoker, author of Dracula, has a few haunts of its own. In fact, Dublin is as overflowing with ghost stories as the pints of beer in Temple Bar. Local pubs are frequented by residents and (allegedly) ghosts alike. Try to spot one at the Davy Byrne Pub or Brazen Head — Dublin’s oldest pub. Is the nightlife not your scene? Check out Trinity College. Rumor has it that it's haunted by a former medical professor. Just a 10-minute walk from the college, you'll find Dublin Castle, home to the ghosts of the headless bodies buried underneath. Another 10-minute walk will bring you to St. Patrick's Cathedral, said to be haunted by a ghost dog belonging to a sailor buried beneath the house of worship. Need an even spookier church to round out your visit? Cross the River Liffey and visit St. Michan's Church — beneath it is a burial vault containing dozens of mummified bodies!
It should come as no surprise that in a city as beautiful as Barcelona, even ghosts may want to stick around after their time has come and gone! Plaça del Comerç, located in the Sant Andreu neighborhood, is a particularly popular spot for specters. In fact, locals and visitors alike often report sightings of a strange spirit out for a stroll between 9pm and midnight — often illuminated by the iconic streetlamp that stands in the middle of the square. While this ghost is harmless, others seem to have a more sinister streak. Take the phantoms that allegedly haunt Gran Teatre del Liceu. This famous theatre was built on a site used for executions in the middle ages. This history has given the theatre a reputation for being cursed. And the rumor seems to have some merit! Since it was completed in 1847, the theatre has been the scene of many fires — one of which destroyed it completely. Nevertheless, even after it was rebuilt, visitors still frequently report ghostly figures roaming the stage. Perhaps they're looking for an encore in the land of the living?

Croatia has seen a sort of transformation recently, one that has taken it from a hidden gem of coastal delights to one of the hottest travel destinations in Europe. What makes this small Balkan nation so appealing? It could be the brilliant sapphire waters of the Adriatic and spectacular white beaches. Or maybe it’s the medieval architecture and walled towns steeped in history begging to be uncovered. Or perhaps it’s the friendly, welcoming people and unique folk culture.

It’s amazing the difference that a year can make — day by day, time ticks steadily onward, until one day you find yourself looking back to see how much has changed. For us, 2021 has been a year of rebirth. From striking out on our own as a newly independent brand in early spring, to our triumphant return to sailing in August, and exciting new plans on the horizon, this year has reaffirmed our belief that in every challenge is an opportunity.
This fall, we’re embarking on the adventure of a lifetime with some very special guests: our loyalty members! The 10-Night Arabian Gulf & Emirates Voyage features onboard perks for LCV members, and carefully curated onshore experiences that are bound to blow our guests away.
There are plenty of ways to choose your next travel destination. You can scope out hot travel deals, stay abreast of the latest trends, or decide to check a once-in-a-lifetime vacation like cruising to South Africa off your bucket list. You could spin a globe, close your eyes, and point—although odds are, that method will lead you to the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Or, you can simply allow the universe to guide you.
It’s an exciting time for all of us here at Azamara. Along with our triumphant return to sailing last summer, we announced a fantastic new addition to our growing fleet: Azamara Onward. Since then, it’s been a year of thrilling preparations as we ready ourselves for Onward’s maiden voyage along the Italian coast this spring.
At Azamara, we’re always looking ahead and excited for the future. This forward-looking spirit is right in the names of our ships – Journey®, Onward®, Pursuit®, and Quest® – each reflecting our unending desire to explore, find new paths and passages, and take in all that this glorious globe has to offer.
One month ago, we christened our newest ship, Azamara Onward, and set sail on a whole new adventure. Travelers from around the world joined us for her Maiden Voyage through the Mediterranean to explore cities and cultures, sample fresh, fantastic flavors, and celebrate a return to the seas. It was a special journey, and we want to share its highlights with you (and give you a peek at where Azamara Onward is heading next).
Sunny, spectacular Spain. It’s a country known for its passion and lust for life. Everywhere you look, you’ll find breathtaking sights, incredible food, and a diversity of culture that charms and captivates in equal measure. And it’s this combination of attributes — passion, diversity, creativity — that has made Spain one of the most architecturally fascinating countries in Europe and, indeed, on Earth. From towering churches to twisting terraces, you’re never far from a building in Spain that will stop you in your tracks in wonder. And today, we’re sharing some of our favorite Spanish architecture with you — all of which you can see when you cruise to Spain with us.
The night of Friday, February 21 was a special one for food lovers and travel lovers in Miami. Azamara® joined forces with celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain and the Wolfsonian-FIU Museum to host "An Evening Aboard the SS Wolfsonian".
Travel is the gift that keeps on giving. Ask any avid explorer, and they’ll tell you: the real value of a journey goes far beyond a handful of days spent in a foreign land. It’s also in the excitement of planning, the anticipation, and the priceless memories that remain long after the suitcases are unpacked. It’s the reason we’re so eager to immortalize our most cherished adventures through souvenirs, stories, and of course, snapshots.
Traveling the world is about more than just seeing new cities, countries, and cultures — it’s about experiencing them. A rugged volcanic island in the middle of the North Atlantic, Iceland has long held a special allure to outdoor adventurers, history buffs, and cultural connoisseurs alike. A world apart from mainland Europe in both geography and custom, Iceland’s breathtaking landscape of towering glaciers, plunging waterfalls, verdant valleys, and black-sand beaches is second only to its charming towns, intriguing folklore, welcoming locals, and cosmopolitan capital.
For as long as we’ve been exploring the world, Azamara guests have known that the thing setting us apart is how friendly our staff and fellow travelers are. And that sense of joy and community spills over to the ports we visit. Let’s face it, there’s something special about being welcomed to a destination with open arms. You feel more comfortable, more at home, and more open to experiencing everything the port and its people have to offer.

Wine can tell us so much about a place, its people, and its culture. Slopes, altitude, sunlight, soil, tradition, and winemaking technique — almost everything unique to a region influences its wine. It’s a fun way to taste the world, glass by glass, and connect more deeply with a destination.
Cruising to the Arabian Gulf allows travelers to experience so much within a voyage. It's one of the most diverse regions in the world, home to desert sinkholes and towering skyscrapers, ancient souks and flashy shopping malls, luxury golf courses and Bedouin camps. This diversity extends beyond the region's cityscapes and rich history into its kitchens and restaurants. Simply put, Arabian cuisine's flavorful and fantastic recipes are more than enough to put this region on your menu of must-visit destinations.

You know what they say about sequels — they need to think bigger, be bolder, and double down on more of what made the original so popular.
As Hotel Director for Azamara, Elisabeth Vogel knows a thing or two about comfort. Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Elisabeth received her hospitality training at Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten, a 5-star hotel in Munich. She’s done it all throughout the years, working in a variety of roles throughout the hospitality industry. In fact, at one point, she was the Assistant Executive Housekeeper for King Hussein of Jordan. So when we say she knows how to treat guests like royalty, we’re not kidding around!
Ah, Italy. There’s nowhere else on earth quite like it. The boot-shaped country’s 20 regions are as varied as their landscapes, cuisine, and architecture. But one quality remains consistent. Italy is beautiful.
Looking at its name, you might think Nice is selling itself a little short. After all, this is a city that basks in year-round sunshine and sensational seaside sights. It’s a manicured city, one full of opulent structures and colorful palm-lined streets. But look a little deeper, and you’ll discover an impressive authenticity in this Queen of the Riviera. Simply put, Nice is more than another beautiful Mediterranean city with a lot to see and do; it is the hub of the French Riviera. Nice brings the world to the South of France and gives it a reason to stay awhile.

Ireland is known for its wide-open spaces, with lush green fields and gently flowing rivers balanced by the rocky and rugged coastlines shaped by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea. With a rich palette of green colors making up its landscape, it makes perfect sense that Ireland is so often referred to as the Emerald Isle.

When you travel to as many incredible global destinations as we do, you learn a lot about common customs across cultures. One thing is certain: no matter where in the world we’re from, we all find happiness in gathering with our loved ones to feast, sing, dance, and create meaningful memories.
Peru might not be as famous a travel destination as South American neighbors like Brazil and Argentina, but if you ask us, that simply adds to its charm. Cruise to Peru with us and you’ll come to understand why. Peru is a kaleidoscope of complex cultures, mystical ancient history, sophisticated cities, and astounding natural wonders.
When it comes to visual feasts, few countries are as enticing as Japan. From the natural beauty of its countryside to its ancient castles, shrines, and temples, to boldly rising futuristic cityscapes, Japan is a country that every traveler should see in their lifetime.
The Caribbean was made for cruising. Flying in the Caribbean can be a confusing nightmare. Cruise ships offer a convenient way to travel between the islands of the Caribbean. Believe me, I’ve done it both ways and much prefer cruising from island to island.

From Malaga to Vigo and everywhere in between, Spain is a rich tapestry of cultures and flavors. Shaped by geography and preserved by centuries of tradition, culinary customs and favorite dishes seem to change every time you find yourself in a new port. But one thing remains the same — in Spain, eating is always about getting together.
The Seven Wonders of the World are extraordinary. They encapsulate so much of the magic, the ingenuity, and, well, the wonder of not just the human imagination, but also the human spirit’s innate drive to leave a lasting impression. Of course, it’s not every day you get to visit one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. But you’ll have the opportunity to see each of them on our incredible upcoming World Voyage. That’s right, all Seven Wonders in one trip — from the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza in Mexico to the ancient gladiator grounds of the Colosseum in Rome. Amanda Poulson has come full circle. In 2012, her Azamara journey began as a Featured Singer aboard The Quest. In 2019, she returned to The Quest as the fill-in Cruise Director. And now, in 2021, we’re happy to announce that she will be taking on the role of permanent Cruise Director aboard The Quest — a position Amanda describes as feeling a bit like coming home.
Not too long ago, we checked a big item off our travel bucket list: cruising to Australia and New Zealand. When the Azamara Quest made her maiden voyage Down Under, our guests loved this unique destination! One of those guests was travel expert Scott Eddy, who joined us for a special 16-Night voyage. “It’s been at the top of my bucket list for quite some time,” Scott said.
The holidays are here, and for many, that means friends, family, and — most importantly — food! Whether it's five-course meals or tasty snacks, there's something special about home cooking and baking around the holidays. Azamara Pursuit Pastry Chef, Wayan, agrees, and he wanted to share a favorite holiday treat that you can make right at home, his famous Gingerbread Chocolate Toffee Bar.
“Travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” - Aldous Huxley, Brave New World Revisited

Can anything compare to the mystique of a Cuban cigar?
Fabio D’Agosta loves to cook — and that should come as no surprise. After all, as a Former Executive Chef and current Azamara Food & Beverage Manager, food is his life! And food has taken him all sorts of interesting places. He’s prepared meals for some of the most famous people in the world — from Queen Elizabeth to Robert De Niro. And, of course, it’s brought him around the world with Azamara for the last decade.
During an Azamara Quest voyage, I was treated to the Chef's Table California menu dinner, and it was such a fun experience. I enjoyed learning the fun educational facts from Darko Lilic, our sommelier on the Azamara cruise. Ready to test your wine knowledge? Here are ten wine facts you may not know:
The Stories & Spirits Club explores our love of world travels, literature, cinema, and cocktails with you. During this special series, we’re catching up with different Azamara crew members and asking them to share what they’ve been reading, watching, and enjoying during this time.
One of the best ways you can prepare for vacation is to read. Read travel guides, read blogs (like this one!), read online forums, etc. But what you should read while on vacation is just as important! After all, is anything better than relaxing in a lounge chair, sipping a cocktail and getting lost in a book? Days at sea are absolutely perfect for book lovers.
Spaghetti, macaroni, penne, fettuccine. They’re all different types of pasta, one of the most popular dishes on the planet. When you think of pasta, it’s hard to not picture Italy. Not only does most of the pasta we eat originate from Italy, but nobody eats more pasta per capita than Italians, who feast on an average of 50 pounds of pasta per year.
519 days. 12456 hours. Over 17 long months. That’s how much time has passed since we last explored the world with you. Over that time, we’ve kept busy, reminisced, and waited ever so patiently for the day to arrive when we would once again set sail.
Mexico evokes many different things for many different people. For some, it’s all blissful beaches and sunny seaside resort towns. For others, it’s music echoing out of a salon de mariachi. Fiestas, art, and ancient temples — Mexico is a kaleidoscope of culture, natural beauty, and wonder.
Lush green forests, beautiful blue waters, endless white-sand beaches — the Caribbean and the Canary Islands are both mosaics of color. But, perhaps, more importantly, they're also mosaics of culture. An ocean apart, these archipelagos are home to a wealth of heritage, history, and stunning natural landscapes. Oh, and let's not forget the food!
One of the most fascinating things about the Canary Islands is that even though they are close together, each one is like its own little world. This archipelago of Spanish islands in the Atlantic Ocean is home to endless beaches, an amazing assortment of culture, and geographical features that make each island genuinely unique.
In 2020, we’re cruising to Africa, and our excitement is building! From the rugged and lush western shores to vibrant South Africa, we’re taking it all in. And when you travel to Africa with us, you’ll see even more of this unforgettable continent with our in-depth Land Programs.
They say, “It’s better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times.” This wisdom particularly applies to New Zealand, an otherworldly destination of glacial fjords, bubbling mud pools, rolling hills, and ancient forests. It’s a place so different, so unique, that it has served as the backdrop for the Lord of the Rings fantasy films.
The Middle East and Arabian Gulf have so much to offer travelers. Yes, there’s luxury and opulence. But there’s also history, culture, and incredible cuisine. During your voyage, it’s possible to soak up all aspects of the region by selecting a variety of onshore activities. Azamara’s unique Azamara Shore Excursions tours provide an immersive cultural experience, without all the hassle of working out the details yourself. We’ve done all the research, planning, and preparation – all you have to do is show up!
To suggest there are only five things to do in Dubai would be a blunder. This extravagant city has so much to offer, which makes selecting a sightseeing itinerary difficult. Dubai is famous for incredible manmade landmarks like the world’s tallest building and the picturesque Palm Islands. But there’s much more to this destination than flash.
If you’ve cruised with Azamara before, you already know there’s so much that sets us apart. From our unparalleled service to our Destination Immersion® experiences — we strive to give you an adventure unlike any other. And one of the best ways we do that is by offering you more time to explore our ports of call with overnight and late night stays. In fact, many times we’re the only ship in port at night. You know the old expression, “So much to do, but so little time”? Well, that doesn’t apply to us.
Greece, a land of ancient wonder, mythology, and serene islands. The thing that brings it all together? Food. Specifically, olives and olive oil. There’s no better way to experience a culture than through food, and Greece is an excellent example. The olive tree, its branches, its fruit, and the oil derived from its fruit all play a part in making this inconspicuous flora a vital part of Greece. In fact, the Mediterranean diet from this region, which includes olives and olive oil, is so essential to the planet that it’s recognized by UNESCO for its intangible cultural heritage. The etymology for the English word oil shows it actually comes from Ancient Greek and Latin words for olive tree and olive oil.
Cuba is a country with a palpable rhythm. Music and dance are the heart and soul of the island. It’s an energetic mix of soulful Spanish melodies and lyrical traditions, and dynamic African percussion and beats.
There are many reasons to look forward to calling on Cuba. From music and dance to cigars and Hemingway, the island has so much to offer. One aspect of Cuban culture we’re most excited to explore is cuisine. You’ve heard the phrase “the way to the heart is through the stomach”. Well, we believe the way to the heart of a culture is through food. When you cruise to Cuba with Azamara, you’ll experience the island as a local would – and that includes tasting delicious Cuban dishes!
There’s a reason the Med is one of cruising’s hottest destinations year after year—it’s simply marvelous. The rich history, the vibrant culture, the delicious cuisine, the welcoming people, the stunning landscapes all create an endlessly explorable place. Popular ports like Venice, Rome, and Athens always impress, but we want you to explore those incredible places that exist beyond the shorelines. Those that are more than a day trip away. Those that other cruise lines can only dream of.
Beautiful beaches. Incredible islands. Fantastic food. And a legendary history that encompasses everything from “the birthplace of democracy” to the gods and goddesses of ancient mythology. When it comes to must-visit destinations, Greece is high on the list.
We’re counting down the days until our return to Greece, and there’s no doubt about it — we’re really excited! The sights, the sounds, the history, we can’t wait to take it all in again. But above all this, there’s one thing we’re definitely looking forward to most — the food! And we’re not alone, our very own Chef Robert also has a love for Greek food. In fact, when we sat down to talk with him recently, Greece and its culinary delights quickly came up.
In 2021, Azamara is embracing the new. After all, we have a new ship, the Azamara Onward, we’re kicking off new experiences like Destination Celebration, and we have a new appreciation for the world around us. And it doesn’t stop there. 2021 is also bringing about new opportunities for the Azamara family — including Tanya Roberts, who we’re excited to announce will be taking on the role of Cruise Director Associate aboard the Azamara Pursuit this October! Tanya, an award-winning lyric soprano and entertainer, has performed more than 75 roles worldwide — from contemporary musical theatre to Baroque opera! Recently, we spoke with her about performing, how the last year brought about new challenges (and opportunities!), and what she’s looking forward to most about once again exploring the world with Azamara. Here are some highlights of that conversation.
The news is out! In August of 2021, we’re once again setting sail to uncover the beauty of the world around us. And our first stop is one of our favorite places on Earth, Greece. Sun-kissed and sensational, with sparkling blue waters, Greece has earned its reputation as a destination for explorers and merry-makers alike. But there’s more to this nation than endless beaches and beautiful views. Vibrant culture, rich history, delicious food, and an unmistakable love of life blanket every inch of the country — from the myriad of islands to the magnificent mainland.
They say variety is the spice of life, and it’s certainly true when it comes to a cruise along the legendary Spice Route. Connecting Europe, Africa, and Asia, the Spice Route certainly offers plenty of variety across its ports. There are lush, green rainforests teeming with wildlife, dusty, pink desert rock with ancient tales to tell, and everything in between — all waiting for you.
Ah, Greece. The birthplace of democracy is an alluring travel hotspot for many reasons. The incredible history, beautiful landscapes, sun-kissed beaches, and mouthwatering cuisine make the Greek Isles one of the world's most popular cruise destinations.
Meet your loyalty ambassador! Nicole Lukacs is Azamara’s first-ever dedicated loyalty ambassador, meaning she will be the personal point of contact for all things loyalty.
Susan Sontag once said, “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” And here at Azamara, we’re happy to embrace this mindset. We’re always excited to visit different places. New places. Old places. Places both well known and off the beaten path. And that’s why we’re so excited about what’s on the horizon. 2022 is shaping up to be a big year for us, and for our guests. We’re welcoming a new ship into our fleet, the Azamara Onward. And with her, we’ll explore more destinations, immerse ourselves in more cultures, and discover more of this beautiful world than ever before.
If you've spent any time on an Azamara Ship over the years, you're probably familiar with Tony Markey. Azamara's long-standing Cruise Director, Tony has been entertaining guests worldwide and managing an ever-expanding cast of performers for more than 12 years. But Tony's never been one to stay still for too long. In fact, his mother always said he was born with itchy feet! That's why we're excited — and not at all surprised — to announce that Tony has accepted new roles as Food & Beverage Manager and Relief Hotel Director on the Azamara Journey. Tony's a natural leader, and we're looking forward to watching him flourish in these positions.
South America is a continent of contrast, many times extreme. Dense tropics give way to rolling grasslands and rugged mountains. Waves lap the pristine beaches of Uruguay’s resort towns while the rhythms of Samba rattle windows in Rio.
When it comes to island destinations, what springs to mind? For many, it’s the sandy shores of beautiful, balmy Bermuda. The beaches are the picture of paradise, and one could easily spend a lifetime with their toes in the sand and a drink in their hand. But move beyond the pink sand and turquoise waters, and you’ll discover an island nation that packs an entire world’s worth of cultural influence into 20 miles tip to tip.
Have you taken a moment to wonder where the Azamara Pursuit, Azamara Journey, and Azamara Quest have been docked over the last year? The answer may surprise you! Since June of 2020, the Three Sisters have called King George V Dock in Glasgow, Scotland home. Located along the River Clyde, these are uncharted waters for our ships! Typically, when we cruise to Glasgow, we dock our ships elsewhere — but this is no ordinary visit.
When making your way through South America, you’re never too far from a stunning church — or the history, artifacts, and beauty they contain. Whether you’re a religious person, or simply an admirer of iconic landmarks, South America’s spiritual houses of the holy offer a perfect balance to the hustle and bustle of the continent’s major metropolises.
